GONORRHEA

Gonorrhea is an infection which is transmitted sexually (STI). It is caused by a bacterium known as Neisseria gonorrhea. Gonorrhea can affect any person but it is mostly young people between the age of 15 to 24 years Dr Chris Wambui state that most young youth don’t use protection dispite having intercourse with multiple partners making high number of youth with gonorrhea rising. Gonorrhea can lead to long term health disorders if not treated accordingly.

This common disease tends to affect warm moist areas of the body such as the eyes, throat, vagina, anus, fallopian tubes, cervix, uterus and urethra.

Causes of Gonorrhea

Dr Chris Wambua states that gonorrhea is transmitted by having vaginal, anal or oral sex. According to some evidence gonorrhea can also be caused by kissing with tongue or rather French kissing with an infected person also people who have contracted gonorrhea before have a higher chance of contracting it again. Research also show that having untreated gonorrhea gives a room for one to transmit other sexually transmitted diseases. Gonorrhea can also be transmitted to a child by infected mother during delivery.

Signs and symptoms of Gonorrhea

According to Dr Chris Wambua in male symptoms may appear two to seven days after being infected but it may take almost 30 days for symptoms to occur according to research with health-link Natural Clinic, Shockingly research show that 10 to 15 percent of male and about 80 percent of women infected with gonorrhea do not show symptoms for the disease. People who have no symptoms of gonorrhea can easily develop complications to gonorrhea and can also spread the disease unknowingly. Symptoms of gonorrhea are mostly experienced and noticed in the morning.

Symptoms of gonorrhea in men

  •  pain or burning during urination is the most likely the first symptom you notice
  • Frequent urination,
  • yellow, white or greenish pus like discharge from the penis
  • swelling and discoloration of penis opening, itching
  • Sores in the anus, swelling and pain in the , rectal bleeding and discharge, pain during bowel movement
  • It can lead to inflammation of epididymis, the inflammation of epididymis is called epididymitis, causing testicles to be painful and have some swelling on one testes or both

Symptoms of gonorrhea in women

although many of them do not develop symptoms of gonorrhea, symptoms can appear from a day to several weeks after exposure. Symptoms in ladies are mild and are similar to other bacterial infections or vaginal yeast hence making them difficult to be recognized. Otherwise, possible symptoms of gonorrhea in women include: frequent urination,

  • burning pain during urination,
  • creamy, watery, yellowish or greenish vaginal discharge,
  • pain during intercourse
  • sharp lower abdomen pain and backache,
  • spotting between periods or heavier periods,
  • itching and sores in the anus, rectal bleeding and discharge.

Dr Chris Wambua states that gonorrhea can also affect mouth and throat resulting into a persistent sore throat, redness and inflammation in the throat, swelling of the lymph nodes in the throat. More interesting findings about gonorrhea is that the disease infection can spread to the eyes when an infected person touches his or her genitals and touches their eyes before washing their hands thoroughly. This can lead to eye pain, swelling of eyelids, pain and irritation in the eyes, redness and inflammation of the eyes, and yellow or stringy mucus around the eye.

Complication of gonorrhea

Dr Chris Wambui states that women who  are prone to have prolonged and long-term complications of gonorrhea if not treated in due time. Untreated gonorrhea may move and affect fallopian tubes, ovaries and uterus inside the reproductive tract leading to a condition known as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). This disease can cause acute pain and damage to the reproductive organs. Scarring and blocking of fallopian tube is yet another possible effect hence making it more difficult for a woman to become pregnant. Damaged fallopian tubes can also lead to condition known as ectopic pregnancy which is the implantation of a fertilized egg in fallopian tube (outside the uterus.)

In men untreated gonorrhea,Dr Chris Wambua says it may result to painful abscess in the testicles hence affecting their fertility, scars in the urethra causing blocked urine or itching urine, epididymitis which is the inflammation of tubes that store inmature sperm. Untreated gonorrhea can also lead to arthritis and damage of the heart valves

Dr Chris Wambua also states that babies born with mothers who contracted gonorrhea may develop blindness, sores in the scalp and infection

Gonorrhea infection also increases risk of HIV/AIDS as the as human might be Susptable after contracting gonorrhea

Tests for gonorrhea

Dr Chris Wambua states that ways in which gonorrhea can be diagnosed include; testing of urine, testing of sample fluids by swabbing a throat, penis, vagina or rectum. Testing of blood can also be used to detect gonorrhea.

Treatment of gonorrhea

Dr Chris Wambua says in treatment of gonorrhea it mostly  includes modern antibiotics and  recommended treatment for gonorrhea is a one-time intramuscular injection of the antibiotic known as ceftriaxone. A healthcare professional may also prescribe an oral medication, such as a dose of doxycycline for a week. If the symptoms continue for more days after treatment, you will need to seek assistance from the healthcare center or clinic for retesting.

Prevention gonorrhea

Dr Chris Wambua states that although researchers are working to develop a vaccine which will prevent gonorrhea, no vaccine have been developed yet. However, gonorrhea can be prevented through abstinence, use of protection during sex, open conversations with partners before having sexual relationship. It is also recommended to have regular clinical checkups
